During a White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Donald Trump has ordered Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to deploy federal troops to Portland, Oregon, following what she described as a “deeply troubling” escalation of violence near ICE facilities.

Leavitt said the President directed Hegseth to “provide all necessary troops to protect war-ravaged Portland,” emphasizing that federal law enforcement and military resources will be used to safeguard immigration facilities under siege by anti-ICE protesters.

The decision comes after live-streamer and independent journalist Nick Sortor was arrested during demonstrations late Thursday night. Leavitt blasted the incident, saying Sortor was “ambushed by Antifa thugs” and that “a journalist was arrested for simply documenting the chaos.”

This new development marks a sharp escalation between the Trump administration and Portland city leadership, reviving tensions that first began during the 2020 unrest. The White House also announced a review into the Portland Police Bureau, citing concerns about how the journalist’s arrest was handled.

Leavitt reiterated that the administration will “use the full force of federal power to restore law and order” and ensure safety for ICE personnel nationwide.
