A congressional field hearing in Charlotte turned emotional Monday morning as families of violent crime victims shared their painful stories and demanded accountability. Hosted by the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance, the hearing was meant to address rising violent crime and repeat offenders — but quickly revealed deep political divisions.
Among the most powerful testimonies was that of Stephen Federico, father of 22-year-old Logan Haley Federico, who was killed during a violent home invasion earlier this year. His emotional plea — “Think about your child” — underscored the devastating failures of the justice system that allowed a repeat offender with 39 arrests to remain on the streets.
CMPD Officer Justin Campbell, injured during the 2024 Shannon Park shooting, recounted how his service led to life-altering injuries, including the amputation of his foot. His testimony highlighted the dangers officers face daily while confronting repeat offenders.
The hearing also heard from Mia Alderman, grandmother of Mary Collins, a 20-year-old brutally murdered in 2020. Alderman described years of anguish as her granddaughter’s case remains unresolved.
While the victims’ families and officers spoke with raw emotion, lawmakers on both sides clashed over solutions, from tougher sentencing to justice reform.
