LIVE: White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt Issues Final Warning Amid Shutdown Day 6
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt warned that federal workers will not receive their next full paycheck if Democrats fail to vote to reopen the government by Monday night.
Speaking to reporters, Leavitt accused Democrats of “playing political games” while President Donald Trump continues to lead the nation through critical negotiations and international meetings.
Republican leaders say their clean, nonpartisan funding bill would reopen the government, pay U.S. troops , and fund essential programs — while Democrats allegedly hold out to push healthcare for illegal immigrants.
Leavitt made clear that layoffs could become inevitable if the shutdown persists, adding:
“We don’t want to see people laid off. But if this shutdown continues, layoffs are going to be an unfortunate consequence.”

Senators will reconvene at 3 p.m. at the Capitol after a vote to advance a Republican short-term funding bill failed on Friday to get the necessary 60 votes to end a filibuster in the 100-member chamber.
“Millions of American federal workers are under enormous financial stress as a result, wondering how they will pay their bills and take care of their families. If the Democrats do not vote to open the government tonight, federal workers will not receive their next full paycheck,” Leavitt told reporters.
The Republican backed clean and nonpartisan funding bill fully funds the important food aid program, gets our troops paid, and reopens the government,” Leavitt continued. “So all of this begs the question, what is the Democrat ongoing shutdown truly about? The sad truth we believe is that the Democrats intentionally shut down the government and are inflicting this pain on American citizens to try and demand free health care for illegal aliens
When asked which departments already started firing people, Leavitt clarified that the president was “referring to the hundreds of thousands of federal workers who have been furloughed as a result of this federal government shutdown.”
She said, “We’ll see how the vote goes tonight” in relation to whether or not another failed vote would spark more firings.
“We hope that the vote will not fail, because this administration wants to reopen the government. We don’t want to see people laid off. But unfortunately, if this shutdown continues, layoffs are going to be an unfortunate consequence of that,” Leavitt explained.
