President Trump during an event at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday, in Washington, D.C. said he would ask the Republican-controlled Congress to extend federal control of Washington’s city police force beyond 30 days, escalating his campaign to exert presidential power over the nation’s capital.
Trump also asserted that any congressional action could serve as a model for other U.S. cities. He has previously threatened to expand his efforts to other Democratic-run cities such as Chicago that he claims have failed to address crime.
President Trump added that the White House will seek “long-term extensions” from Congress to maintain control of D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department, part of the president’s push to crack down on crime in the nation’s capital.
“I think the Republicans in Congress will approve this pretty much unanimously,” Mr. Trump said.
Mr. Trump announced the deployment of members of the National Guard to D.C. on Monday and said the federal government would also take control of the D.C. police. In an executive order Monday, the president directed the D.C. mayor to provide the services of the Metropolitan Police Department for federal use “for the maximum period permitted under section 740 of the Home Rule Act.”
